Senior Moments

Fifteen years after the making, When Harry Met Sally remains a perennial favorite -- despite Meg's dated mop. But let's face it, it's the documentary footage that Rob Reiner pulled together of those adorable elderly couples telling their true love stories that touch us where it counts. A tidbit of family history, especially when recounted by a grandparent or favorite great-aunt, helps children develop a strong identity and gives personal meaning to their lives.

This is the premise behind family psychotherapist and film biographer Sari Eckler Cooper's interactive Oral History workshop. Cooper -- who recently founded Video Legacies, a video production company that captures loved ones' stories in digital format -- will guide you and your kids through the basics of oral history interviewing skills, while giving grandparents tips on how to mine and enrich their personal stories. Videotaping these stories offers an opportunity to understand them better and to have the benefit of sharing their experiences. It's a way for people to put together who they were, who they are and what they have given the world.

With the holidays around the corner, here's a chance for grandparents and grandkids to get together, have fun and create a family documentary that will be a gift to the entire clan. Can Junior's take on Grey Gardens be far behind?
